These Notes from the South consist mostly of interviews with South African artists, performers, writers and musicians. But the South is a metaphoric place as well as a physical one, and so I have included conversations with creators of all kinds from around the world. From electronic musician Matthew Herbert to film-makers Todd Solondz and Mira Nair, these people approach the world and their work from a perspective that is entirely different to view from the western mainstream. In the process, they offer reflections of life that are more accurateand insightful than the ones that dominate our societies and our thoughts. And also our hearts - because the South is a place that, despite everything, is infused with a relentless beat. - Peter Machen
